This guide is intended for human rights monitors and members of other organizations (particularly the National Prevention Mechanisms established under the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture) who conduct regular visits to places of detention. It urges these groups to incorporate the expertise of physicians and other health professionals into their visits and explains the importance of medical knowledge for conducting accurate and effective assessments of prison conditions and for preventing torture and ill-treatment.
