This is a featured lesson plan of Speak Truth to Power (STTP) Human Rights Education Program, which is centered around the stories of human rights defenders from around the world. In 1976, Maguire was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for her contributions to the resolution of the problems in Northern Ireland. Through this lesson about Maguire, students will be able to understand “troubles” in Northern Ireland, identify the ways and reasons that people participate in violence, analyze the role of the individual in reducing violence in their communities, and develop a personal action plan of anti-violence.
