In this adaptation of an article prepared for the International Review of Education, the effectiveness of human rights education (HRE) is discussed. The author presents three operating models for human rights education: the Values and Awareness Model, Accountability Model and Transformational Model. Each of these models is analysed according to their target groups, goals for learners and intended contribution to social change. The author concludes by outlining ways in which the field can be further developed, professionalized and recognised.
