Part of the Gender and SSR Training Resource Package, these training exercises on penal reform are designed to help deliver training on gender and security sector reform issues in an engaging and interactive manner. Penal reform aims to build effective and accountable penal systems that operate within the rule of law and uphold human rights. Gender is integrated into penal reform to ensure that penal policies and procedures address the needs of men and women as well as meet international and national human rights standards. Integrating gender also serves to prevent and respond to gender-based violence and provide appropriate health services to prisoners (including women and girls who are pregnant or nursing).
