This document provides guidelines on what judges can do to help stop torture, in particular when they hear cases in which allegations of torture are made. The paper cites rules against torture set out in international law and the safeguards required by law to help prevent torture. These international standards were drafted to apply to all legal systems in the world and take into account the rich diversity of legal procedures; they set out the minimum guarantees that all legal systems should provide. This document also refers to provisions against torture in Chinese law and to China’s international obligations on this issue.
