This course will introduce the international field of human rights education (HRE), including presentations of HRE programming approaches, pedagogical practices and teaching and learning resources. Examples from all regions, including Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America, will be infused. In addition to learning about the HRE field, participants will be exposed to ‘the basics’ of curriculum design and develop an applied product, for example, the development of lesson plans or a training workshop. The course is intended for educators and trainers working in the formal and nonformal education sectors.
Dr. Felisa Tibbitts, a leading HRE expert, is UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Higher Education and Chair in Human Rights Education at the Human Rights Centre of Utrecht University (Netherlands). She is also Adjunct Asst. Professor at Columbia University, a Visiting Professor at Nelson Mandela University (South Africa) and director of Human Rights Education Associates (HREA), which she co-founded in 1996.
