2011 has been quite a year! The democratic revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt have sparked a popular uprising throughout the Middle East that few had predicted. Now more than ever movements advocating democracy, human rights and rule of law need to be supported.

At HREA we expanded our work in the region and strengthened our decade-long collaborations with our partners in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, and alumni of our regional training programs.

In 2011, HREA also:

• trained 2,351 human rights defenders worldwide from Amman to Zagreb;
• developed a policy for human rights education in 700 schools for Palestine refugee children in Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank;
• assisted ministries of education in Bosnia-Hercegovina, Kosovo and Mauritius with infusing human rights in secondary school curricula;
• jump-started a network of human rights educators in the United States.
