OSCE to evaluate women's rights and anti-trafficking project in Albania

TIRANA, 22 January 2003 - Achievements and future activities of an OSCE
project on Women's Rights and Anti-Trafficking Education (WRATE) will be
discussed in a three-day meeting to start in Tirana tomorrow.
Ambassador Osmo Lipponen, the Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, will
deliver the opening address at this evaluation meeting.

On 23 and 24 January, all WRATE trainers will receive a training on
advocacy and lobbying by the Albanian National Training and Technical
Assistance Resource Centre (ANTTARC). On 25 January, together with the
National Consultant of the project, the participants will evaluate regional
workshops conducted in the current phase of the project, the experiences
gained and the areas for future improvement.

The OSCE Presence in Albania initiated the WRATE project in November 2000.
The project enabled training for 18 persons who specialised in women's
rights and anti-trafficking issues. At the same time, the Civil Society and
Gender Unit of the Presence organised 105 workshops in different regions of
the country, and trained over 1,600 persons.

In the future, the OSCE Presence plans to extend its activities to the
north-eastern areas of Albania. Those activities will target Roma groups,
rural women, high school students and teachers, university professors and
health care providers, the police and their anti-trafficking units, judges,
prosecutors, and OSCE personnel. The Presence will also aim at deepening
its co-operation with national structures, e.g. through organizing joint
training with the Albanian Committee for the Equal Opportunities.

The Presence will also co-operate with the OSCE Office for Democratic
Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) in the next phase of the project. It
remains fully committed to continued combating of trafficking, through
preventive measures and assistance to the victims of trafficking.
Media representatives are kindly invited to attend the opening of the
event, which will take place at the Shalom Centre, Rr. Ali Demi, Shkoza,
Tirana (tel. 04 355 215), on Thursday, 23 January 2003, at 10:00 a.m.
